Media Release:

Defence and security company, Saab has been selected by SecureFuture to provide the security management system for a new prison at Wiri, South Auckland.
The New Zealand Government recently contracted the SecureFuture consortium to design, finance, build, operate and maintain a new 960-bed men’s facility needed to meet the growing demand for prisoner accommodation in Auckland. The Fletcher Construction Company will begin building the prison this year as the consortium announced Saab SDS New Zealand Limited as the security systems contractor.
Saab has received orders for design, construction and facility maintenance worth more than NZD 50 million.
Saab has a reputation for high quality integrated security management as shown in the completion of the Southern Queensland Correctional Centre near Gatton, Australia. That task was completed on time and on budget.
Director of Saab SDS New Zealand, Dean Rosenfield said, “It was Saab’s reputation for advanced engineering quality and performance that most attracted us to the consortium.”
The preparatory work will be carried out in Saab’s high technology facility in Adelaide where a systems integration laboratory is already operating. After testing, the system will be installed in Wiri. Construction is due to finish in 2015 after which the 25 year facility maintenance period will begin.
The visual feature of this computer-based system is a Google Earth type presentation of the facility being protected. It enables the operators to interact with each and every sensor and control in the system from their desktop. The management system allows seamless integration of all sub-components of the security system without being locked into specific security systems contractors.
“It was the high standard of integration and the assurance of full control over all aspects of the site that convinced the SecureFuture consortium of the readiness of Saab to meet the required security standards and quality of service.” Mr Rosenfield said.
SecureFuture is made up of Fletcher Construction, who will design and construct the prison, Serco, who will operate it, Spotless Facility Services, responsible for maintenance, along with equity participants John Laing, InfraRed and The Accident Compensation Corporation.
