Foreign Minister Bob Carr today condemned plans by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) for further long-range rocket tests between December 10 and December 22 this year.
“This is needless provocation by an already isolated and impoverished regime,” Senator Carr said.
“The DPRK has again demonstrated disregard for world opinion by pursuing militarism at the expense of its region and its own people.
“Rocket testing by the DPRK is a credible threat to Asia-Pacific security and to the safety of millions of people in neighbouring countries.
“I have today directed that Australian opposition to these tests be conveyed to the DPRK Ambassador to Australia Mr Ri Jong Ryul and to the Government in Pyongyang.
“The tests defy UN Security Council resolutions in 2006 and 2009 as well as the UNSC President’s statement of April 16, 2012 which demands North Korea not proceed with any further launches using ballistic missile technology.
“They should be abandoned, and replaced with constructive dialogue between the North Korea and the international community, addressing disarmament and the conditions of global sanctions on the DPRK.”
