Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Justice Jason Clare announced today that applications are now open for grants under the $40 million National Crime Prevention Fund.
The Fund was announced in April by the Prime Minister and Minister Clare at the Koch Centre for Youth in Macquarie Fields.
“The National Crime Prevention Fund will use the money seized from criminals to prevent crime.” Mr Clare said.
The National Crime Prevention Fund will target crime hotspots and will fund:
- Grants to local councils for safety infrastructure including closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems and lighting.
- Youth mentoring and outreach programs run by not-for-profit community organisations including Father Chris Riley’s Youth Off The Streets, Police Citizens Youth Clubs and Blue Light organisations.
The National Crime Prevention Fund is part of the Gillard Government’s package of measures to target street crime and gang violence across Australia.
Minister Clare said that this was a great opportunity for local councils and not-for-groups to fund local crime prevention projects.
“People have a right to feel safe in their community. These grants will fund local programs and security infrastructure that help make our communities safer,” Mr Clare said.
“Local communities are in the best position to recognise local problems and develop local solutions.”
The grants are being funded by assets seized from criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Fund.
Applications open today and close on 29 May 2013.
