Minister for Defence Stephen Smith today announced the appointment of former Australian Foreign Minister the Honourable Alexander Downer to the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) Council for a three year term.
The Council is ASPI’s governing body.
Mr Downer is the Leader of the Opposition’s nominee to the Council. Mr Downer replaces former Senator Russell Trood whose term on the Council concludes on 31 December.
“I congratulate Mr Downer on his appointment to the ASPI Council.
“ASPI plays a critical role in informing debate and decision-making on Australia’s national and international strategic and security choices.
“Mr Downer brings his considerable experience and expertise to the Council and will make an important contribution to its work.
“I thank Dr Trood for his substantial contribution over his three year term on the Council.”
