Global Security Exchange (GSX) 2023, the annual conference of ASIS International closed day two in Dallas, TX.

Concluding the afternoon of Wednesday 13 September, the event features an extensive program with more than 200 education sessions, daily keynote speakers and general sessions, and a show floor with more than 400 leading innovators from the security industry.

In Tuesday’s general session, President George Bush discussed his time in office, conflict abroad, and the 9/11 attacks. President Bush also shared his thoughts on the most pressing issues facing the United States today, and the effectiveness a president can have when dealing with those issues.

Throughout GSX, much of the education has focused on both the threats and opportunities today’s security professionals manage regularly.

Tuesday’s educational lineup featured speakers discussing artificial intelligence, data analytics, insider cyber and physical threats, the cutting edge of cyber technology and security, as well as the convergence of physical and cybersecurity.

In his session “My Journey into Cybersecurity,” Carlos Galvez, Jr., CPP, shared his personal experience of shifting from a role primarily focused on physical security for 25 years to the convergence of physical security and cybersecurity that has occurred more recently. Galvez highlighted that even though learning the ins and outs of cyber may seem intimidating to security practitioners who have spent most of their careers in the physical realm, it is not only a crucial aspect of today’s terrain, but it is also a skillset their backgrounds have already prepared them for.

David Morgan, an intelligence strategist and advisor at CrowdStrike, discussed the advantages of building in-house intelligence in his session “Context—The Reason to Build a Cyber Intelligence Capability In-House.” Morgan shared with participants examples of reports that are available to the public and demonstrated how these may be missing some components for an organization’s specific needs. Attendees were also able to begin on a draft of what in-house intelligence would look like for their specific use case.

In “How Cybersecurity, Edge Analytics, and AI Have Impacted the Design and Implementation of Physical Security Systems,” panelists discussed the convergence of a variety of fields, ranging from physical security to cyber, to engineering, to software development. The panel was made up of four experts: Antoinette King, PSP, Jeffrey Slotnick, CPP, PSP, Steve Reinharz, and Will Knehr.

The panelists discussed how to use analytics to design and implement the best security solutions possible.
