Edith Cowan University has appointed Dr Ian Martinus to lead the University’s industry engagement efforts in the cyber security sector.
Dr Martinus will lead the new WA AustCyber Node at the Joondalup Innovation Hub on ECU’s Joondalup Campus.
The Node’s main goals include job growth in the cyber security industry and collaborative opportunities between universities, government and the private sector.
It complements ECU’s existing expertise in cyber security education and research and will focus on critical infrastructure protection and management, cybercrime and big data.
ECU School of Science Executive Dean Professor Andrew Woodward said he was delighted to welcome Dr Martinus to lead the WA AustCyber Node at the Joondalup Innovation Hub.
“Dr Martinus brings significant global experience in dealing with emerging companies and their unique intellectual property,” he said.
“He brings a broad-based skill set that can connect industry to education and assist public-private relationships and initiatives.”
Dr Martinus said he was excited to take on the new role, which includes implementing the strategic vision of the sector competitiveness plan for the cyber security industry and to work closely with counterparts around Australia.
Dr Martinus has experience in the private and government sector including land development, economic development and corporate strategic ventures in the United States, Asia and the Middle East.
His role will ensure that micro and small to medium companies involved with industries such as mining, oil and gas, agriculture and infrastructure understand their role in the supply chain of secure data transfer.
The State Government established the Joondalup Innovation Hub and allocated $800,000 from its New Industries Fund to establish the WA AustCyber Node with Edith Cowan University and AustCyber.
The WA Node also works closely with the WA Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation.
As part of the growing national presence, AustCyber has launched ‘AustCyber Sessions’ where businesses can meet face-to-face with experts on topics ranging from technology trends and commercialisation, export opportunities, funding and grant options, education and research opportunities and business growth strategies for start-ups, scale-ups or established cyber companies.
