Australia’s defence industry welcomes Minister for Defence Industry, Christopher Pyne’s speech to US companies, delivered on the 6th of October, outlining the Federal Government’s commitment to developing a strong local defence industry, capable of exporting to global markets and supporting the security of our allied nations.
Australian Made Defence campaign spokesperson, Kerryn Smith said the Australian industry has the capability to become globally competitive, and that Minister Pyne’s sentiment demonstrated the Government’s commitment to that.
“Minister Pyne’s commitment to driving innovation, skills and maximising opportunities for the local supply chain is critical for industry,” said Ms Smith.
“Australia’s defence industry will become globally competitive if it has the opportunities to develop and invest in capabilities and new technologies.
“Australia’s future maritime acquisition programs will help boost the local sector and drive our indigenous advanced manufacturing capabilities.
“With local capabilities, skills, technologies and the workforce to build and sustain these fleets, we will be able to not only meet our own Defence requirements, but also venture into other markets and expand our export capacity.
“Our supply chain is already providing state of the art equipment to projects in Australia and abroad, and by boosting our capabilities it will bring economic benefits across the nation.
“With the rise of the knowledge economy and the decline of the resources sector, now is a crucial time to invest in our advanced manufacturing capabilities and boost the local defence sector and its supply chain.
“Commitment to a strong and supported defence industry, along with boosting our local advanced manufacturing capabilities, are both integral to the sovereignty and security of the nation and will ensure long-term economic prosperity.
“We welcome the Government’s and Minister Pyne’s commitment to making the Australian defence industry globally competitive and look forward to working together to fulfill that objective,” said Ms Smith.
