Helping protect Australians online.
The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, today opened the 2012 Cybersafety Summit and launched National Cyber Security Awareness Week 2012.
Both events aim to promote the importance of cyber security and safety and the simple steps we can all take to protect ourselves online.
“Australians increasingly rely on the internet in their everyday lives, for banking, shopping, socialising and running businesses. It is important that we continue to enjoy these services, but in a way that is as safe and secure as possible,” Senator Conroy said.
“Taking simple steps like changing passwords, regularly checking privacy settings on social networking sites, and only downloading apps from reputable publishers, will boost your safety online.”
The Cybersafety Summit brings together young people, parents and teachers, as well as industry and government representatives to discuss how to keep young Australians safe online.
“It was really pleasing to see so many members of the Government’s Youth Advisory Group (YAG) attend today. The YAG has been invaluable in helping shape our response to cybersafety, making sure online safety material is accessible and relevant to young people. There are more than 175 Summit participants, with student representatives from 39 secondary schools from across Australia.”
Summit attendees participated in a number of workshops conducted by special guest Ruby Rose, the Good Game Guys and representatives from the Australian Federal Police and the Alannah and Madeline Foundation.
“This year more than 700 organisations, including over 600 schools, are participating in National Cyber Security Awareness Week. Activities and events will be held around Australia during the week and I encourage everyone to participate,” Senator Conroy said.
