Counter terrorism operation update

AFP LogoVictoria Police and the Australian Federal Police have charged a man following a recent major Melbourne Joint Counter Terrorism Team operation.

The Preventative Detention Order holding an 18-year-old Hampton Park man was removed by police and the man was promptly re-arrested.

He has since been charged with conspiracy to commit acts done in preparation for, or planning, terrorist acts under section 101.6 by virtue of section 11.5 of the Commonwealth Criminal Code Act 1995.

He will appear at Melbourne Magistrate’s Court today.

An 18-year-old Hallam man was charged on Saturday with conspiracy to commit acts done in preparation for, or planning, terrorist acts under section 101.6 by virtue of section 11.5 of the Commonwealth Criminal Code Act 1995.

The 18-year-old fronted Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Saturday afternoon where he was remanded in custody to reappear on Friday, 24 April.

An 18-year-old Narre Warren man has been issued with a summons in relation to prohibited weapons offences and will appear in court at a later date.

The two other Narre Warren men, aged 18 and 19, have been released pending further enquiries.

Operation Rising has resulted in the execution of seven search warrants in the South Eastern Metropolitan area, in the suburbs of Narre Warren, Hampton Park, Hallam and Eumemmerring early last Saturday morning.

Victoria has well tested, cooperative, counter terrorism and emergency management plans in place and constantly monitor and assess our preparedness to respond to a range of emergencies.
