Sydney & Auckland, November 14, 2012 — Zenprise®, Inc., the recognised leader and innovator in mobile device management (MDM), today released the latest Zenprise Mobile Cloud Report which uncovered key trends for rival mobile platforms, Apple iOS 6 and Google Android. The report also sheds light on the management shift from mobile devices to apps and content. The Zenprise MDM Cloud Report for Q3 2012 sources data from Zencloud™ customers to identify key trends in enterprise mobility. The full report is available on the Zenprise website.

iPad Drives iOS Growth

At 57 per cent of deployed iOS devices in Zencloud, the iPad is driving the growth of iOS overall. Initially, organisational support of BYOD demands drove mobility initiatives in the enterprise but as CIOs uncovered new ways to leverage mobile devices to increase productivity and revenue, they began to adopt and issue devices for mobile line-of-business and secure content initiatives.

“The data along with conversations we’re having with our customers suggest that mobile line-of-business and secure content initiatives are highly correlated with tablets,” said Amit Pandey, CEO and president of Zenprise. “iOS 6 will grease the skids for iPad adoption, as the new version’s enterprise features increase Apple’s business readiness.”

Android dominates Transportation, Healthcare, and Communications Services

This was the first time Zenprise analysed data by vertical and the company found significant differences in platform adoption in each industry. Despite continued iOS dominance overall, Android saw an up-tick, with heavy usage across transportation, healthcare, and telecom services. The largest adopters of iOS include the education, energy, legal, real estate, and insurance industries. These findings support the common belief that Android devices are better suited for field-based use cases because they are generally less expensive, allow more device control options, and are applicable across more hardware platforms.

Not Just Devices Anymore – Mobile Management Expands to Apps and Content

Organisations are blacklisting 39 per cent and whitelisting 50 per cent more apps than last quarter. Mobile app deployment remains high, with more than 100 third-party apps, not to mention custom apps, in the Enterprise App Catalog. Oil and gas, transportation, and utilities are making the highest number of apps available to users.

Zenprise customers continue to deploy mobile policies associated with protecting data and line-of-business initiatives. The passcode remains the most commonly deployed policy at 62 per cent (up from 54 per cent last quarter), followed by GPS, with the most dramatic increase, at 39 per cent (up from 24 per cent). However, not all line-of-business-type policies saw an increase. Restrictions of device resources or apps (such as the device Google Play, the device camera, or Bluetooth) decreased from 34 per cent last quarter to 29 per cent. Other policies deployed include VPN at 21 per cent, Wi-Fi at 29 per cent, and two-factor authentication at 13 per cent (down from 20 per cent).

Mobile App Adoption in the Enterprise

The most common third-party mobile apps deployed in the Zencloud Enterprise App Catalog include NitroDesk TouchDown, Citrix Receiver, Adobe Reader, Concur, and Evernote. By comparison, the most common installed apps on the devices enrolled in Zencloud are Apple iBooks, Angry Birds, Facebook, Gmail, and GoodReader. The most commonly blacklisted apps are Angry Birds, Dropbox, Google Play/the App Store, YouTube, Skype, and Mail, while the most commonly whitelisted apps are Adobe Reader, Evernote, NitroDesk TouchDown, QuickOffice, Lookup, and Citrix GoToMeeting.

From a vertical perspective, the biggest blacklisters are in the banking, entertainment, and communications services industries while the biggest whitelisters are in the legal, utilities, and communications services industries.
