The University of Wollongong India (UOW India) and IBM have signed a partnership agreement to improve students’ educational experience and career readiness. The partnership will focus on several key initiatives to provide students with industry-relevant skills and opportunities while working on a degree at UOW India.
UOW India joins a group of engineering institutes in India to have the opportunity to collaborate with IBM, offering students access to IBM’s Innovation Centre for Education (ICE) advanced training and educational resources.
ICE offers courses in key technology areas that equip students with the in-demand IT skills and expertise required to succeed in the industry. Qualified students will have access to internship placements and career opportunities with various leading organisations worldwide.
UOW India Campus Director Nimay Kalyani said the partnership with IBM is a game-changer and will benefit students immensely. “We are delighted to partner with IBM to provide a rich experience to students,” said Kalyani. “Through this partnership, our students will benefit from placements across various sectors, including multinational corporations, global system integrator organisations, independent software vendors, leading research and development organisations, domain business houses, start-ups, and entrepreneurial ventures. The collaboration aims to equip students with industry-acknowledged and valued skills and knowledge, ensuring they are well-prepared for the demands of the modern workforce.”
The partnership seeks to replicate the success of an existing partnership between IBM and UOW Dubai. Professor Mai El Barachi, Head of the School of Computer Science at UOW Dubai, said the partnership will enrich UOW India’s academic offerings and strengthen the students’ competitiveness in the global job market.
“The partnership emphasises practical, hands-on learning experiences that align with industry needs and trends,” Professor El Barachi said. “The collaboration will focus on training in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, cloud technologies, big data and business analytics, cyber security, gaming technologies, contextual mobility, and blockchain technologies. The partnership underscores our commitment to providing a world-class education that equips our students with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in today’s rapidly evolving job market.”
“There is a strong demand, across the industry, for IT professionals to be deeply skilled in in-demand technologies,” said IBM’s ICE South Asia Director Vithal Madyalkar. “The Innovation Centre for Education initiative from IBM will equip the students at the UOW India campus to adapt to the dynamics in the industry and drive technology and business innovation. The engagement model will ensure deep theoretical knowledge and practical hands-on exposure to the students, coupled with broad-based industry alignment, interaction, talent discoverability, and excellence in their professional practice. Through this collaboration, we can positively impact the outcomes of our students.”
Students will have access to an online platform to improve their knowledge and skills through courseware, projects, guest lectures, competitions, and discussion forums. Over the last 13 years, the IBM initiative has been helping upskill the student community across many countries.
